Solving the Hierarchy Problem without Supersymmetry or Extra Dimensions: An Alternative Approach
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper, we propose a possible new approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem without supersymmetry and without extra spacetime dimensions. This approach relies on the finiteness of string theory and the conjectured stability of certain non-supersymmetric string vacua. One crucial ingredient in this approach is the idea of “misaligned supersymmetry”, which explains how string theories may be finite even without exhibiting spacetime supersymmetry. This approach towards solving the gauge hierarchy problem is therefore complementary to recent proposals involving both large and small extra spacetime dimensions. This approach may also give a new perspective towards simultaneously solving the cosmological constant problem. ∗ E-mail address: [email protected]

Large Dimensions and String Physics at a Tev
Large extra dimensions, of size of order of TeV −1 ≃ 10 −16 cm, arise naturally in the context of supersymmetry breaking in string theory, while strings at a TeV scale offer a solution to the gauge hierarchy problem, as an alternative to softly broken supersymmetry or technicolor. In this short review, 2 we present consistent perturbative realizations of string theories with large volume compac...
متن کاملSolving the Hierarchy Problem with Exponentially Large Dimensions
In theories with (sets of) two large extra dimensions and supersymmetry in the bulk, the presence of non-supersymmetric brane defects naturally induces a logarithmic potential for the volume of the transverse dimensions. Since the logarithm of the volume rather than the volume itself is the natural variable, parameters of O(10) in the potential can generate an exponentially large size for the e...
متن کاملThe Cosmological Constant in Brane Cosmology
We propose, based on brane cosmology, an explicit relation R = MPlR 2 extra of the radius of the observed brane Universe and the extra dimensions for solving both the hierarchy problem and the cosmological constant problem without fine-tuning. This relation associates the dark energy (i.e., cosmic acceleration) in the cosmological physics with the electroweak scale in particle physics, thereby ...

متن کاملSupersymmetry Breaking and Composite Extra Dimensions
We study supergravity models in four dimensions where the hidden sector is superconformal and strongly-coupled over several decades of energy below the Planck scale, before undergoing spontaneous breakdown of scale invariance and supersymmetry. We show that large anomalous dimensions can suppress Kähler contact terms between the hidden and visible sectors, leading to models in which the hidden ...
